The Daughters of St. Paul: Nuns of the New Millenium
By: Joan Jaclyn Lao
Are you in search of great books to nourish your soul? Or relaxing music to accompany you during your
prayer time? Or videos about life issues that are both entertaining and informative? Pauline Book Centers have all these and more!
The Pauline Book Centers are the focal points of the apostolate of the congregation of women called the Daughters of St. Paul. They call themselves Paulines because St. Paul is their father, patron and inspirer. Very much like St. Paul’s deep love for Jesus and dedication to preaching the good news, these women have their hearts set on Jesus and His desire that all men know and experience God’s great LOVE for them. Thus, like their patron who used the most viable and modern media at that time which was writing letters, the Daughters of St. Paul uses the most effective and suitable means of communication available at present to proclaim the Gospel. This includes the publication, marketing and distribution of books, music cassettes, CDs, videos, magazines, posters, and even computer softwares and the internet.
The Daughters of St. Paul had their humble beginnings in Northern Italy in 1915 when Fr. Alberione, their founder, first gathered and prepared a small group of young women and girls to carry out the
apostolate of printing bibles during the time when the Bible was not yet well known. Soon afterwards, they expanded and their radio ministry evolved. Following the footsteps of St. Paul who travelled far and wide to proclaim the Gospel, the Sisters began to move out of Italy in 1930 to continue the mission in every corner of the world. At present, they are now found in fifty (50) different countries all over the world.
The evolution and modernization of their ministry never ends as they continually seek to welcome the challenge of speaking about God in new ways to the new generation keeping in mind their Founder’s reminder that each assignment is a ‘pulpit’ from which the Word of God will be preached, whether this be in print, in television or in cyberspace.
“Love, true love, is inventive. When one has a fire in her heart, she finds many initiatives and many ways of performing her mission.
True love…makes one think, run, organize.”
- Venerable Fr. Alberione
